How do I choose the right ring size for an engagement ring or gift?
Request a free ring sizer, and we’ll mail it to you. Most rings can also be resized within the first year at no extra charge. For gifts where sizing is unknown, ordering a common size and getting it resized afterward is an easy solution.

How do I choose the right diamond?
Start with the cut because it has the most visible effect on how a diamond looks and interacts with light. From there, balance color and clarity against your carat weight target based on what you can detect with the unaided eye at a normal viewing distance.

What are the 4Cs of diamonds?
Cut, color, clarity and weight are the four standards used to evaluate and price a diamond. Cut has the most visible impact on appearance and should be prioritized. Clarity measures internal and external factors and characteristics; color grades how colorless the stone appears.

Which diamond shape is right for me?

Should I choose a gemstone or a diamond?
Diamonds score a 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, making them highly durable for daily wear. Gemstones like sapphires, rubies and emeralds offer color and character but may require more careful handling over time. If the piece will be worn every day, durability should be factored into your decision. 

What ring styles are most popular for engagement rings?

Platinum is the most durable and stays naturally white without replating. White gold offers a similar look at a lower price but requires rhodium re-plating over time. Do you offer financing, layaway, or installment payment options?

When is the best time to buy a diamond?
Diamond prices fluctuate based on market conditions without predictable patterns. If you’ve chosen a stone and want time to decide, contact us within 72 hours, and we’ll lock in the price. Buying “shy”–choosing a carat weight just below a whole or half-carat mark–can offer real savings with minimal visible difference to the unaided eye.

Why do nearly identical diamonds differ in price?
We price each diamond based on our cost at the time of sourcing, reflecting market conditions and supplier relationships at that time. Two stones with similar grades can carry different prices based on subtle differences in their characteristics or when they were acquired.

Why don't I see discounts on your loose diamonds?
We price our loose diamonds based on our actual sourcing cost, not a marked-up retail figure, so there’s no promotional discount to apply at this time. In fact, we are so confident in our prices that we offer a price match program: if you find an advertised diamond of comparable size, shape, and quality, we will match the competitor's price.

How does Blue Nile keep prices competitive?
We operate primarily online, which avoids the overhead of a traditional retail footprint. We source directly and price based on our actual cost. Those savings carry through to what you see at checkout, and we pass any competitive pricing advantages on to you.

Order Status, Tracking, and Shipping


Can I track my order?

In-stock items typically process within one to three business days. Custom and made-to-order pieces may require additional lead time. Your ship date is set by the item with the longest processing window.

How long will it take to receive my order?
Blue Nile shipping time depends on the order value. U.S. orders over $500 ship overnight, and orders under $500 ship within two days. International orders are estimated at two to five business days. 

Do you offer expedited or rush shipping?
Yes, expedited options are available, and orders over $500 ship overnight by default. If you have a time-sensitive occasion, contact our team before placing your order to confirm the fastest available option.

Can I change or cancel my order after placing it?
It depends on where your order is processed. Contact our customer service team as soon as possible if you need to make a change.

What shipping options do you offer?
We offer standard, expedited and overnight shipping for U.S. domestic orders, as well as international shipping to many countries.

What is your return policy?
The Blue Nile return policy gives you 30 days from your shipment date to return any item in its original, unworn condition for a full refund or exchange with no questions asked.

What cannot be returned within 30 days?
Personalized jewelry, custom orders, engraved items, items resized after initial purchase, Diamond Upgrade program purchases, clearance and final sale items are not eligible for return.

Can I process the return online?
Yes, for U.S. purchases, you can log in to your account and initiate the return from your order history.

Which items cannot be processed online?
International orders and U.S. customer Blue Nile returns for exchanges or loose diamonds returned for mounting are not available for online processing. Please call us at 1-800-242-2728 to process.

Can I return an item that was given to me as a gift?
Yes, we’ll exchange the gift item for merchandise credit within 30 days of the original purchase.

Will the buyer of my returned gift know that it was returned?
The buyer will not be notified that the gift was returned.

Do I pay the return shipping costs?
No, return shipping is complimentary during the 30-day return period.

How should I package my return for shipping?
Set up a Return Merchandise Authorization online by calling us, and we’ll email you step-by-step packaging instructions and a prepaid return label.

How long will it take Blue Nile to process my merchandise return?
Processing your Blue Nile merchandise will take approximately four to five business days after we receive your item. For exchanges, allow an additional two to three days for the replacement to ship.

I am expecting my returned item to be replaced. How long does it take to reach me?

Will I be notified during the merchandise returns process?

Do you offer a warranty on the jewelry I purchase from Blue Nile?
Yes, every Blue Nile purchase includes a Blue Nile Limited Lifetime Warranty against craftsmanship defects. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear or damage caused by trauma, negligence, lack of regular maintenance, loss or theft.

How do I best care and maintain my new jewelry purchase?
We offer complimentary cleaning and a product check-up every six months as a practical measure to prevent stone loss or damage caused by prongs that bend, pull or break during normal wear.

You cover the shipping and insurance to ensure the ring is safely transported to our facility. As a gesture of gratitude for choosing Blue Nile, we'll cover the shipping costs to return it to you.

How can I safeguard my purchase against damage, theft, or loss?
We recommend contacting an independent insurer such as Jewelers Mutual or arranging coverage through your homeowners’ or renters’ insurance. Before choosing a provider, compare rates and coverage.

What is your ring resize policy?
We provide complimentary Blue Nile resizing for your Build Your Own Ring® and diamond bands within the manufacturer’s recommended sizing range during the first year of purchase. Call us at 1-800-242-2728 to arrange it.

Diamond and gemstone eternity rings with a specific number of gemstones per finger size; milgrain or ornate bands, some silver rings, or rings with alternative metals such as Tungsten cannot be resized.

Do you offer engraving services?
Yes, Blue Nile offers engraving on eligible rings and jewelry at checkout. 

Do you provide jewelry cleaning services?
Yes, Blue Nile offers complimentary jewelry cleaning services.

Do you offer valuations or insurance replacement certificate?
Yes, qualifying Blue Nile purchases include an insurance replacement certificate document stating the retail replacement value of your item.

Buy Back and Upgrade Program


Do you offer a diamond upgrade program?
Yes, our Diamond Upgrade Program lets you trade in a loose diamond purchased from Blue Nile toward a larger or higher-quality stone.

How does the upgrade process work?
Contact a diamond and jewelry consultant to start, and they’ll confirm eligibility and help you select a new diamond.

Are all diamonds eligible for an upgrade?
The program covers loose diamonds purchased from Blue Nile that are returned in their original condition with their original grading report. Confirm eligibility with our team before initiating the process.

Can I upgrade my setting as well?
Yes, when upgrading your diamond, you can select a new setting.

Does Blue Nile buy back jewelry?
Blue Nile doesn’t offer a general jewelry buyback program, but the Blue Nile trade-in program is specific to loose diamonds purchased from us and applied as a credit toward a future diamond upgrade, not a cash purchase.

James Allen Acquisition


Is the James Allen website closing?
As part of our ongoing efforts to provide seamless, high-touch experiences for our clients, James Allen will become a brand we offer through Blue Nile.

I have a James Allen product. Who do I contact for customer service?
Our commitment to service is the same across both brands. During this transition, you can contact the support team associated with the site where you made your purchase. For James Allen products purchased on the Blue Nile site, service will be completed through Blue Nile’s service channels.
