November’s Wonderfully Warm-Hearted Birthstone: Citrine

Celebrate a Scorpio or Sagittarius' November birthday with a rich, autumn-hued citrine. Beyond being this month’s birthstone, this splendid gem captures the rich colours of fall—and it’s also a symbol of love to give on your 17th anniversary.

WHAT IS CITRINE MADE OF?

Citrine is a type of iron-rich quartz, making it durable with a ranking of 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale. Citrine crystals often spawn in geodes alongside their coloured-quartz cousins, amethysts. And, though often mistaken for yellow topaz, it’s a completely unique gemstone.

WHAT MAKES QUARTZ CRYSTALS CITRINE?

French for "lemon," citrine colours range from pale yellow to warm amber, and even a rare deep, reddish orange known as "Madeira" after its resemblance to the fortified wine. The colour range depends on the gemstone’s exposure to heat and light. Top care tip for citrine jewellery? Keep it out of direct sunlight as prolonged exposure will fade its colour.

NOVEMBER’S BIRTHSTONE ORIGINS AND MEANING

Citrine represents healing, comfort and calm; the gem is a bringer of prosperity, creativity and new beginnings. Citrine is also considered to be a stone that encourages wealth, success and overall optimism and personal power.

HISTORICAL AND FAMOUS CITRINE

Citrine was popular in jewellery of the 1920s, and notable wearers during the Art Deco period included Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo. Before then, Scottish noblemen imbedded it in their swords and daggers.
