How Do You Know If a Ring Fits Properly?

  • The ring should fit your finger comfortably: snug enough so it won't fall off, but loose enough to slide over your knuckle with relative ease. When the knuckle is bigger than the base of the finger, measure both places and pick a size in between the two.
  • The difference from one whole ring size to the next is a matter of 2-3mm in the circumference of the inner part of the band.
  • Many people find that a variance of a half size or less will still fit comfortably most of the time.
  • The wider the ring, the tighter it will fit on a finger. For anything 5mm+ in width, go a half size up.
  • The interior of a Comfort Fit ring puts less metal in contact with the finger, so they tend to fit a little loose. If you’re between sizes, round down. If you have large knuckles, you may need to go up a half size.
  • It’s also good to keep in mind that finger size fluctuates slightly based on diet, temperature and activity. The way your ring fits may change slightly over the course of a single day.

Measure the inside of another ring that fits

  • Use a tape measure or our printable guide.
  • Make sure that the ring that you’re measuring is worn on the same hand and finger that the new ring will be worn. This may be tricky if you’re buying an engagement ring as a surprise, as many people don’t wear rings on their left-hand ring finger until they are engaged! It’s OK to use the right-hand ring finger as a guide. (Just keep in mind that dominant hands tend to be slightly larger than non-dominant; typically by a quarter or half size.) So, if your ring recipient is right-handed, be sure to size up.
  • Try to pick a ring of a similar width.

More measuring tips

  • Measure your ring size at the end of the day when your finger is at its largest.
  • Measure 3 to 4 times for more accuracy.
  • If the ring falls between two sizes, order the larger size up.

How to Measure Ring Size and Keep Your Proposal a Surprise

Over 40% of brides-to-be want to be involved in the ring selection process. While the best way to find their ring size is to ask, if you want to make it a surprise, here are some tips to begin:

  • Ask your significant other’s friends or family if they know your recipient’s ring size.
  • Borrow one of your significant other’s rings (from the correct finger) and use the ring measurements on our pintable guide to determine its size.
  • If you’re willing to simply guess (and re-size the ring later), it may be helpful to know that the most commonly purchased women's rings range between size 5 and size 7, with size 6 being the most popular.
  • The most commonly purchased men's rings range between size 8 and 10.5, with size 9 being the most popular.
  • If in doubt, go larger, not smaller. A ring that’s too large will still slide over the knuckle and can be resized after your proposal.
  • Also key in terms of keeping the ring (and your proposal) a secret is making sure that we ship to a location that doesn’t ruin the surprise—and that we don’t unintentionally send any emails to a shared account. So be sure to work with our experts on these all-important details.

What If I Order the Wrong Ring Size?

  • Blue Nile provides FREE resizing for most engagement rings and wedding bands within the manufacturer's recommended sizing range during the first year.
  • If you wait longer than a year, or need to get your ring resized by another jeweller, it's much easier and cheaper to make a ring smaller than bigger, so if you don’t know the size—err large.
  • If you need a completely different ring, we offer a 30-day exchange policy for your convenience.

How is my ring altered when it’s resized?

  • Ring resizing requires adding or removing small amounts of metal.
  • Your ring may be slightly thicker or thinner after resizing.
  • Due to the nature of hand craftsmanship, ring sizes can vary slightly by a few millimeters.

Blue Nile craftsmen adhere to strict quality standards, so your resized ring will fit beautifully with all of its original sparkle. After the band is resized, each ring gets cleaned and polished before being returned to you.

Rings that can't be resized

  • Some of our ring styles cannot be resized due to their design indicated by cannot be resized on the product page, under the ring size selection.
  • Eternity rings, milgrain or ornate bands, silver rings, or rings with alternative metals such as tungsten cannot be resized.
  • We are happy to exchange your ring for another ring in the correct size within 30 days of purchase.
  • It’s important to note that should you opt for an exchange, your new ring may contain fewer or more gemstones, diamonds, or a reduction or increase in precious metal weight, which may cause an increase or decrease in the price.
