Our flight back from Nanjing, China to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida was delayed for 4 hours in Chicago on Thursday night. You see, we work together and we were trying to get back from our business trip in time, so we could catch our Friday evening flight to New York for a little R&R after having a very busy last quarter including a very hectic winter break. She had no idea; I was planning to surprise her in New York.
So anyways we get back to our apartment in Florida at 3AM. We manage to get some sleep before have to wake up to pack again. We set off to the airport for what is supposed to be a relaxing weekend. Not to bore everyone, but our flight to New York had mechanical problems before we even take off and the next flight we were supposed to go on is delayed by 2 hours. At this point, we felt like we felt like Tom Hanks, we were living in airports. We arrive at our hotel in Midtown at 3AM and set out for some late night Pizza, which was never a problem in the city that never sleeps.
The next morning we meet her sister and her fiancé, who drove up from Washington D.C., for breakfast. They know that I will be proposing to her today, so they along with both sets of our parents had been pre-instructed to follow a specific set of instructions and met us at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Our parents had flown into the Big Apple this morning, had lunch together and were waiting for us at the Met in front of Bacchanal: A Faun Teased by Children by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, our favorite sculptor.
As Carolina, her sister, future brother in-law and I meandered through the museum; we arrived at the sculpture garden, where she first saw her parents. It seemed for ever before she saw my parents. She claims even at this point, she had no idea of what was about to happen. I was already on bended knee as she turned back to face me...
She said “yes” at the center of the universe, surrounded by our family and the most beautiful man made creations.
