My proposal took place on the pitch at the Seattle Sounders match at Century Link Field September 17th, 2011.
Needless to say, my fiancee Cara and I are big Sounders fans. As such, I had hoped to arrange a surprise proposal on the field in front of 30,000 screaming fans! Step one in arranging this was a chance meeting I had with the team owner (Adrian Hanauer) who loved my idea. He put me in touch with the Sounders marketing folks and I thought that I was on my way to success! I quickly heard back and had my hopes dashed as they informed me that the Sounders do not assist with proposals due to the overwhelming number of requests that they receive. Unwilling to give up on my idea, but with my target date quickly approaching, the pressure began to mount. I next thought that one of the team sponsors might be able to assist. I contacted Bruce Titus Subaru and shared my plan with them. They too loved it, and they promised to help! They sponsor a half-time contest in which two participants try to score a goal from the 18 yard mark. They said they would have both Cara and I as the contestants and this would allow me the opportunity to be on the field and pop my question! So with the date officially set, I obtained a #11 Sounders Jersey with Will You Marry Me printed on the back. I wore this under my jacket and when we were on the field I removed it and the stadium camera crew projected my jersey on the big screen and the crowd went crazy! I proceeded to kick the ball and I then ran over to Cara and got down on one knee asked my question and received a big YES! She received a gorgeous Blue Nile engagement ring and even though I missed the goal kick I still scored anyway!!
This is where the story would likely end, but I had one more surprise for Cara. I had arranged to have a suite for the game and I had invited our families and closest friends. So after the proposal we made our way toward our normal seats only to make a diversion toward the suite area. She was in enough of a daze to not ask to many questions. This allowed me to open the door to suite and have all of those people closest to her there to share in our special moment. Along with the guests, I had a Sounders Jersey printed for her with the number 12 and her new last name. She was overwhelmed, I scored big points, and now I just have to try and not rack up too many penalty minutes !
Thanks again to Blue Nile for their part in making our special day such a success!
