My fiancé has always wanted to us to go to Friday Harbor (a small town in the San Juan Islands northwest of Seattle) for the weekend. She has talked about it several times but we have never had time to go. I realized a few months ago that's what I wanted to give her for her birthday - a surprise trip to Friday Harbor. The more I thought about it, I realized that our night in Friday Harbor would be a perfect time to propose. So, 2 months ago I took a day off work (my fiancé thought I was at work all day) and took the ferry to Friday Harbor to scout out the island and find the perfect place to propose. I walked around Friday Harbor and talked with almost every local hotel and restaurant owner saying that I was planning a very special night for my girlfriend and that I wanted to see their nicest/most romantic place they had to offer. I eventually found a little restaurant with a nice romantic corner table. Then I found a hotel that I really liked, where I looked through each room until I found the one I wanted -- on the top floor with a balcony overlooking the harbor. Standing there, overlooking all of Friday Harbor from the balcony, I realized that was the spot where I would propose.
So fast forward 2 months back to the big weekend. When my fiancé got home from work on Thursday night (she had already taken Friday off for her birthday), I told her that we were taking a trip in the morning and that she should pack an overnight bag and bring some warm clothes and a nice dress. She was really excited about taking a surprise trip and went to bed anticipating what would happen the next day. So in the morning we got up early and took the ferry to the San Juan Islands. Once we got to Friday Harbor, we rented mopeds and spent the day exploring every part of the island. We went to the national park, fed farm animals along the roadside, watched the sunset on a hill overlooking the ocean and visited a winery. After a full day, we went back to our room and relaxed for a few hours in front of the fire. At night, we walked down to the main part of town, where we had a very nice, romantic dinner. After dinner, my fiancé said she was getting tired, so we headed back to our room. When we got back to our room, she laid down on the bed and thanked me for a wonderful birthday. She said she had a great day full of surprises, at which point I walked over towards her on the bed and asked her if she was ready for just one more surprise. I helped her up off bed and walked her over to the window overlooking all of Friday Harbor. I held both her hands in mine while I told her how much she meant to me and how I couldn't imagine my life without her. Then I got down on one knee, pulled out the ring and asked her if she would marry me. She started smiling and through muffled tears, proclaimed “Yes”. She said it was the best birthday she had ever had, and I'm sure it is a weekend we will both remember forever.
