Our Proposal Story: Special Day

When my girlfriend Danielle and I woke up in the morning I told her that I wanted to check out a breakfast place ten miles south of our house in Long Beach. She was up for it so when we were getting ready I told her to pack a bag in case we drove further down the coast following our meal. She obliged. When we got to Long Beach instead of a Diner, we arrived at the airport. Danielle's curiosity was peaked but still no clue. I had booked us a flight up the coast to Monterey (hour flight). Once we landed our rental car was waiting for us at the tiny airport. Prior to leaving I had mapped out a breakfast place just three miles from the airport, "First Awakenings". Following breakfast we drove the beautiful stretch of road called "The 17 Mile Drive" in Pebble Beach. If you've never drove this road you should. The views of the unique landscape and Pacific are stunning. Along the way we took photos and video and stopped by the golf course clubhouse for a drink. Following our Mojito break we continued with our drive until we arrived in Carmel by the Sea were Danielle did some shopping. While Danielle was in one of the stores I called ahead to the Inn that I had booked a room at to make sure that everything was ready. It was. The candles I had sent ahead and a jewelry box I had refurbished and FEDEX'd ahead as well (too risky for discovery when checking in at the gate prior to boarding the plane). The jewelry box had belonged to Danielle's mom who died when Danielle was a two year-old child. I also ordered a dozen white roses from a local florist (her mom's favorite)...today was her mom's birthday and I wanted her mom's spirit to be part of my proposal. When we checked in we dropped our stuff off in our room and then we immediately went to the deck off of the small lobby that overlooked the ocean for some wine and cheese. While we were taking in the view one of the Inn employees discretely made an excuse for me to get away for a minute while Danielle stayed behind at our table to continue to continue to take in the sites. I ran back up to the room and set everything up, music, candles, roses, and jewelry box, and then went to get Danielle to bring her back to the room for the big moment. When we got back to the room Danielle saw the jewelry box that once belonged to her mother and the water works began. When she opened it to look inside I got down on one knee and told her that I loved her and that she needed something to keep inside of the jewelry box. As I gave her the ring, I asked her if she would spend the rest of her life with me...we got married June 18, 2009.
