The color scale is used to describe the color present within a diamond or gemstone. These colors have been established by expert gemological laboratories, and are carefully scrutinized against a master set of diamonds. For diamonds, the complete color scale ranges from D, indicating complete colorlessness, to Z, which indicates a distinct yellow-brown or grayish cast. Blue Nile carries only D-J color. For gemstones, color is described in terms of tone and hue.
